The Paprium saga feels like a tale as old as time now. Initially available to pre-order back in 2017, this Genesis / Mega Drive side-scrolling beat 'em up took years to finish development, only to be released in very small numbers—certainly not enough to cover the pre-order campaign.
Developer WaterMelon Games then launched a crowdfunding campaign in 2022 to bring the game to other formats and raise the cash required to fulfil its outstanding orders, but little has been heard about the venture since—well, nothing positive, at least.
WaterMelon has now issued a new statement via its Patreon, but before you get too excited, it's hardly a groundbreaking announcement.
Hello everyone.
We wish you a good year 2025, there is still time to do so.
Thank you for your patience, there were not much news recently.
Albeit slow, some progress is being made and more news will be issued later on.
Best wishes
WM
Copes of the game do exist—we've got one in the Time Extension office—but it's clear that a lot of people who ordered the game back in 2017 are still waiting for theirs to arrive. Many people have labelled this one of the biggest retro gaming scams ever, with over a million dollars taken and precious little to show for it.
Do you think we'll ever see Paprium get the wide release that was promised? Or are you hoping that the community can dump the ROM eventually? Let us know with a comment.

Even if it isn’t dead there’s no reason to be interested in this game. It’s just a bog standard beat em up that does nothing to push the genre forward and is headed by one of the biggest clinical psychopaths in the gaming industry, that’s not even mentioning the ludicrous price tag attatched to the thing and the near decade long wait for ppl to even GET their cartridges. Dont see why I should give this my time of day when infinitely better games like streets of rage 4, shredders revenge, fight’n’rage, final vendetta and all the countless openBOR projects exist, not to mention all the sega genesis homebrew projects that ARENT complete dumpster fires for WAAAAYYYYY less.
I received a copy a few years ago, unfortunately I sold it on Ebay, regret it now.
They’ll be announcing a partnership to launch the game on the SuperSega next…
Even if the ROM were dumped, it would need the custom chip or whatever they used emulated.
Which at this point, maybe they should officially do and release as a PC port so people can actually play the game.
There is a novelty in playing on a Genesis, but if that chip is more powerful than the original console (the stats they released sure sounded like more than a stock Genesis could handle), are we really playing a Genesis game anymore?
A dump/emulated version would be best, as it usually is. Even if you do have the game its not unusual for the chip in the cart to become detached leaving you with a cartridge that does nothing apart from rattle as you shake it.
@hste My understanding is that what comes loose is a heatsink or some kind of cover. Of course, that's still bad and may also lead to other problems. It probably wasn't necessary either.
"later on"? Like in 5 years?!
This message is ridiculous and just shows how they completely don't give a damn.
The business tactics of WaterMelon are fraudulent.
Imo, news sites should refuse to give them any attention until WM publicaly announces a release date AND starts shipping the cartridge to the people who paid them but received nothing yet.
I pre-ordered this (wasn’t a backer) and amazingly was one of the lucky ones who got the game. I left it on a shelf, sealed, as despite wanting to play it thought I’d see how much I wanted to, then after a few years decided I’d just sell it. I don’t regret it, just wish so many other people hadn’t been effectively scammed.
@BulkSlash Hahahaha!!!
I'm one of the few people to have a copy, and IMO it's a good game. Not amazing or excellent, but I'd like to think the original intentions were in the right place when they started this project. I do hope those that paid good money for a copy....actually get their copy. And I also hope that this gets a ROM dump at some point in the future for the rest of the world to try playing.
I received my 2017 preorder, but made the mistake of backing another project of theirs, + the game gear version of Paprium.
Live and learn i guess.
If only someone could crack the protection code/chip or whatever this thing is using so the rest of the world could try it. Seems impossible though at this point.
I misread Paprium as "Parpium". God I'm immature...
Yeah, I fell for this one and kickstarted. I mean, they do have some track record with Pier Solar, and I got that game. Oh well. I liked the idea of a new Game Gear game. Was not fully aware of the trouble with Genesis carts at the time.
@Hairlesswookiee I was one of the few too. I ended up selling mine copy completely sealed off in COVID... I didn't even play it. By that time, I was kinda over it, and sold it at basically what I purchased it for. Whoever bought it I'm SURE enjoyed it. Or sold it off for a higher price, haha, who knows
Patreon? You mean Kickstarter?
People to this day keep on about dumping the rom for the game but that would be worthless on its own as the "custom" chip it uses has never been cracked and unless it ever is dumping the game will get you no where. That doesn't take into account no emulator would be able to run it either as the chip used is considerably more powerful than the original hardware so you would need completely custom emulators too. If I recall this game didn't even like running on non-official Sega hardware either as it was pretty much programmed not to do so. Fonzie being the retro hardware snob he is pretty much went out of his way to make sure as few people as possible could play the game and then blamed everyone else as the reason why. He attitude alone is the reason it's had so many issues so he deserves no more money.
I backed the Dreamcast version of this via Kickstarter and for the life of me, I can't think why or how I got suckered into it?
I'm pretty sure I'll never see it released so all that money has just gone down the drain.

After the Great Architects debacle, I am rather surprised that they are even still in business and that people were still stupid enough to give them their money.
WM is a scam company, always has been.
Terrific and rather revolutionary game but he needs to work on his communication updates.
@PinballBuzzbro "It’s just a bog standard beat em up that does nothing to push the genre forward"
Erm...you just stated the complete opposite of what Paprium is. 🤔
@Astropez I got my game, not a scam. 👍
Damiin, we have two copies of papapaparium here at the orphanage, no-one every plays it. Do you want one?
Good, you've still yet to send me MY copy!!! And I bought it directly from your site, not through Kickstarter.
@GlamorousAlpaca Can I have one Pls? I never go my copy
@slider1983 tell that to the hundreds of people that didn't get their games or got blatantly lied to and scammed with other games form WM, like Pier Solar, for which half the orders were not fulfilled and not refunded
@Astropez I always found it odd he sent out the games to some people and not to others. I wonder why? 🤔
